Much Ado About Donovan

September 7, 2010

Long time soccer fans have not though the best of thoughts about Landon Donovan in the past.  He has been called weak, referred to as having no heart, and lacking character during his time in the spotlight even though he is one of the best and most recognizable faces in U.S. Soccer.

The former two times U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year began his professional career in Germany, but was not very happy in his time there.  He came to Major League Soccer (on loan) and led his team to a championship in his first year (2001) with the San Jose Earthquake.  Upon returning to his German club in 2005 he stated his desire to return to MLS. His German club relented and sent him back.  However, he had already been traded to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Now the future of the star is up in the air.

While on loan to Everton of the English Premier League, Donovan has been tearing the league up. Many thought he did not have what it took to play at such a competitive level.  Donovan in fact has fit in very well with the English club.

The trick is now whether or not he will stay or return to California when the terms of the loan deal expire on March 10th.  At that time he is supposed to return to his L.A. team.

Everton would love to lock up a deal for the young American soon rather than give other teams a chance to swoop in and steal him.  If they do so now, they could possibly save some money; if they end up doing well in the World Cup the price tag would undoubtedly be higher.

While no one likes to lose a star player, neither the MLS or the Los Angeles Galaxy would be worse off would the star depart for the English Premier League.  The fact that such a quality player came from their ranks would go a long way to establishing the credibility of both, not to mention the quality of play.
